Quick answer: A service page explains a specific job you perform. A service area page explains how you serve a real location. Start with strong pages for your main services and a clear coverage overview. Add separate location pages when you have useful local information to share, rather than duplicating the same page with different city names.
For a small contractor, the question is not how many pages a competitor has. It is whether each page helps a homeowner make a distinct decision. Ten nearly identical pages can be less useful than three well-supported service pages.
What belongs on a service page?
A service page answers “Can this company handle my job?” Describe the work, who it is suitable for, common situations that call for it, your process and relevant proof. Include the areas where the service is available and a clear way to request it.
For a hypothetical HVAC company, furnace repair and heat pump installation could warrant separate pages because the jobs, questions and buying decisions differ. “Cooling solutions,” “AC services” and “air conditioning help” should not become separate pages if they all describe the same offering.
What belongs on a service area page?
A location page answers “Does this company serve my area, and what can I expect there?” Useful material might include genuine local projects, the services available in that market, travel boundaries and verified logistical details.
Do not imply an office exists in a city simply because your crew travels there. Do not invent local projects, customer quotes or code requirements to make the page seem unique. Where permitting affects a job, link to the appropriate official authority and verify the details before publishing.
Use this simple page map
| Page | Primary question | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Water heater installation | Can you replace my water heater? | Installation process, options, real project |
| Service areas | Will you travel to my property? | Accurate coverage list and boundaries |
| Plumbing in a specific city | What work do you provide here? | Actual local work and relevant service links |
The city page should summarize the available services and link to their detailed pages. The service pages should explain the work fully. This gives each page a job without repeating every paragraph across the site.
When is a separate city page worth creating?
Ask three questions: Do we genuinely serve this market? Is there a distinct local need? Can we provide information that makes this page useful beyond a changed place name? If the third answer is no, keep the location on your coverage overview for now.
You do not need to publish every service-and-city combination. A page for every suburb multiplied by every service quickly creates a maintenance burden. Start with locations that matter commercially and where your business has credible evidence.
How to avoid overlapping pages
- List the existing URLs and give each one a single main purpose.
- Group synonyms that describe the same customer need.
- Choose the strongest existing URL for each group.
- Link from general coverage information to the relevant service details.
- Review Search Console to see which pages appear for important queries.
Two pages appearing for a similar query does not automatically mean harmful cannibalization. Investigate whether they satisfy different needs, whether the preferred page is receiving impressions and whether their content largely duplicates. Do not merge or redirect pages based on a keyword match alone.
Website coverage and Google Business Profile are different
A website location page does not create a new Google Business Profile location. Google’s business guidelines limit how real-world addresses and service areas can be represented. Keep both channels accurate; avoid virtual-office claims or duplicate profiles intended to cover more cities.
